Drilling wintercrops in Nordic Seed
28/09/2017
Wintercrops is being drilled these days at Nordic Seed. Sofiehøj, our breeding station on Lolland, is working hard on drilling winterbarley trials. Next will be winterwheat.

It has been a difficult start of the season, because of big amounts of rain. The rain has given our field team many worries this year. After the soil has been plowed, it needs about two days of drying before drilling can begin. This has been difficult this year because of many days with rain.
The breeding station in Dyngby is also busy drilling wintercrops. They have finished drilling yield plots in winterbarley. End of this week they will finish the last multiplications with winterbarley and Seedmatic plots.
Next will be winterrye and winterwheat, they hope to start drilling end of this week before the rain is coming in the weekend. At the trial station, Abildgaard near Skive, all wintercrops has been drilled.
Nordic Seed Germany in Nienstädt have had the same challenges with drilling as in Denmark, but here there is a bigger drilling window and not the same pressure as in Denmark. The plan was to start winterbarley drilling last week, this was postponed by bad weather. They hope to start today or in the weekend. When the winterbarley is finished, they will start winterrye and end up with drilling winterwheat. The optimum drilling window for winterbarley and winterrye is 25th of September to primo October. Winterwheat is optimum drilling window from primo October to medio September.
For harvest 2018 there will be established 7000 trial plots with wintercrops in Nienstädt and 22.000 trials plots with wintercrops in Denmark. All in all we will be drilling about 30.000 trial plots for harvest in 2018. Same level as for harvest 2017. Now we just cross fingers and hope for good and dry weather.
